A snapshot in time: Australia's Labour Market and COVID-19

The National Skills Commission (NSC) have released their first publication, A snapshot in time: Australia’s Labour Market and COVID-19.

 

This first report analyzes the impact of COVID-19 on the existing labour market, including demographic impacts (disproportionate impact on women and youth), reognial impacts, and uptake of the JobKeeper scheme. In addition, the report analyzes available recruitment data and data obtained from their Jobs in Demand employer survey to help inform the National recovery response. 

 

Furthermore, the report outlines NSC project activity directed to 'bridging the gap' between displaced members of the labour market and new job opporutnities. To this end the report advocates a skills clustering approach, where occupations are broken down into three key components:

  • Core competencies which underpin all jobs

  • Technology tools associated with a job

  • Specialist skills which detail the work activities for a job

Job seekers can then align complementary core competencies, supplemented by technology tools and specialist across occupations to identify new opporutnities which may be of interest. This opporutunity is then aligned with a training gap.
