Drilling Industry Workforce Development Strategy – Ensuring Sustainability

This project focuses on identifying workforce development issues impacting on the drilling industry (senior drillers, drillers and offsiders) and some potential policy solutions to address them.  Focus areas include:


·       Current industry skill demand and forecast demand over the medium term;

·       Skill pathways in the industry and the potential for change to meet industry skill demand;

·       Changes in industry business models focusing on diversification and vertical integration of aspects of activity across the drilling supply chain – industry sustainability;

·       Potential measures which may be implemented to attract skilled workers back to the drilling industry;

·       Industry skilling models and their appropriateness in the current and future industry environment from an industry perspective;

·       The current training package and industry views around its structure in the context of previous work undertaken by the RITC;

·       Existing potential for the establishment of new apprenticeships/traineeships in the industry

·       Role of alternative delivery models; and

·       Technology (particularly automation) and its potential industry impact in the short, medium and longer term including its impact on job skills content.

The Resource Industry Training Council (RITC) is a state government funded joint venture between Chamber of Minerals and Energy (CME) and the Australian Petroleum Production and Exploration Association Ltd (APPEA), gathering industry intelligence, on current trends, skills gaps and training needs, which it provides to industry, the State Training Board (STB), Department of Training and Workforce Development (DTWD), the WA Government.
