Preparation for future in mining industry

One of Australia's biggest mining companies has built a fifty metre section of railway line in a Pilbara school yard. BHP Billiton is behind this scheme and it's the biggest rail installation in an Australian high school and will be used to teach kids the skills they'll need to get a job on the railways, without them having to move away from their home town. It's a generous donation that'll keep students at Hedland Senior High school on the right track with a 53 metre rail installation in their school yard. The $280,000 gift from mining company BHP Billiton will be used to teach these students skills which can get them fast tracked into the mining industry. We have our own people helping to develop the skills here, so it's going to be easier for us and faster and the learning will allow them to get quicker in our operations, says BHP Iron Ore Asset President Edgar Basto. Students will learn to repair, maintain and diagnose problems on this track in preparation for work on the thousands of kilometres of rail network across WA, but this piece of track will also give Hedland students the chance to get a job in their hometown. Premier Mark McGowan says "One of the things that disappoints people most of all in regional communities is when the young people leave town, never to return and by providing these apprenticeship opportunities, these young people can actually stay in town, get a good job".
