Safety legislation for Mining, Petroleum and Major Hazards Facilities is being consolidated and updated under a single Work Health and Safety (Resources and Major Hazards) Act. The new Act and regulations will be less prescriptive, with a greater focus on risk management.

Consistent with the legislative aim to enhance safety across the industry, the regulations will include a requirement for new and existing employees to undertake risk management training. Stemming from the training, it is expected workers in the resources industry will gain a shared general understanding of the importance of safety and the fundamental knowledge and skills required to assess and avoid risks/hazards in the work place.

The project will result in the identification of a training model, including key areas of knowledge, to efficiently and effectively deliver the level of risk management training in keeping with the new Work Health and Safety Act.
